Being ready for a disaster
entails many things. A HAM radio operator being
ready for a disaster involves even more. Depending
on the role that you wish to play as a volunteer
communicator, after securing your family, there a
number of things to do to be prepared to respond at
the drop of a hat.
First steps first! Secure your
family.
(My family is
secure, take me to the next step)
Securing your family is priority number one. The
steps for this are identical for everyone, not just
HAMS.
Get a kit, Make a
plan, Be Informed.
Food supplies need to be sufficient to feed each
person in your family and if you have the space and
resources, a little extra for a friend in need. Each
food group needs consideration and vitamins and
medicine as well. Canned good will last well beyond
the date on the can but rotating stock for better
quality is a good idea. Canned citrus ought to be
rotated out due to the acid in the fruit.
It may be better to buy
the food now and worry
about storage afterwards. The main idea is just get
started. You can tweak the menu and storage as you
go. Consider storing the food on the ground floor
and against an outside wall or maybe a heated
outside workshop. If you have to dig it out, much
better to make a hole in the wall for access than to
take days and risk injury to dig it out from the
middle of the house.
Water needs are significant. Drinking, cooking,
bathing, etc. for one even one day requires a
substantial amount of storage space. Depending on
where you live and the type of disaster encountered,
you will have different options.
